Sponsor- Jaipur Virasat Foundation
Material- Blue pottery, Terracotta, Resin, Cloth puppet and Bamboo canes

Elephantscape

Hailing from Jaipur and being in close network of artisans and craftsmen of Rajasthan Gopal felt as a  responsible artist to showcase plight of elephants in Jaipur via medium of extensively used crafts of Rajasthan like Blue pottery, cane craft used by taziamakers, terracota figurines by a potter community called Prajapatis, Cloth puppet by local puppeteers, metal enameled techniques and miniature painting over an elephant made of resin. A collab between craftsmen and him was an experimental venture of introducing crafts in contemporary arts.

Elephant the four footed, large bodied, sweet paced animal has become so much a part of the desert state’s capital Jaipur and its arts, crafts and design at micro level and cultural regimen at macro level that we have never realized being the subjective participants of enslaving this friendly animal.   By utilizing intrinsically traditional methods to the contemporized form and with a background of the  natural landscape of Jaipur, Gopal showcase “Elephatscapes” and focus the misery of elephants being kept as chained slaves to tourism machinery, transporting foreign tourist up to the hilly fort of Amer.

His penchant for elephant murals also has a similar deeper reason than what meets the eye. “A temple in Amer that I used to frequent had an elephant chained in, lonelyand bereft of company. The sight of the lonely pachyderm struck a chord in me prompting me to come up with multiple depictions of elephants in my art. It is an inherent call to draw attention to the plight of hundreds of such elephants so confined”, he states.

Chatterati

Imagination is a person’s best friend. When we step onto this land, we build altogether a different world, which has lots of freedom to do what we like doing and that too in our own innovative form.

Sometimes, our imagination goes to another level when we create quite inspired characters out of random thoughts, which become our most excellent pals with whom we love to interact. Books have woven many such stories and inspiring characters  from imagination. But changing world into more digital and small chats and of attention span being few seconds, the language and length of textual narratives are rapidly altering..

As part of ” Glitterarty” Art and Literature fest at Cyberhub, Delhi the little, colorful birdies symbolised those Chatteraties and lost world of books..

They hop onto books and benches, text covered cuboids and, sit on the concrete windows to guide humans through their  curiosities. As a response pun struck Gopal came up with these bunches of multi hued birdies that made a perfect pal escorts for people to explore the magical world of art and narration and get inspired to build up their  own pioneering thoughts and reconnect with books.

Location- Select City Walk, Mall, Saket
Executioner- ARTWORKZZ

Material- Crepe Paper, Metal Rods, led lights, discarded vinyl, newspapers

Spring is in the air

Gopal has drawn a specific corollary about the reconnect to mother nature, love, bonding and revival of enjoyment in simplest of things and beauty. Showing how the textures and patterns from each layer can work together seamlessly to create something beautiful, so simply so naturally. The art installation involving giant tree branch blossoming into flowers, new fresh leaves and buds. “My earlier work has often been playful, colorful and has incorporated much of abstract imagery and semiotics. But when I thought of public art installation I envisioned more simpler, realistic sort of metaphorical blending of objects and function to connect with common urban/metro man and appreciate art , a  tree branch, from  layered paper flowers in a mall as an arrival of spring season  made a perfect sense. .

I really liked the idea of morphing the simpler, recycled materials into an embodiment of a beauty at this exaggerated scale.” The branch is seated on the high tension cables fastened and suspended over central atrium of the plaza, and spans across and above reaching the ceiling height above the 3 floors.

Aside from symbolizing spring celebrations, the installation “spring is in the air” is meant to act as a meeting place for members of the different community and to inspire conversation between strangers visiting the mall.

Starting from the idea of cardboard boxes, to more flexible, tough, weatherproof yet translucent material let him choose and resource his method and materials. First displayed at  Garden of Five Senses, Delhi it has travelled to to Jaipur Lit Fest as part of their musical evenings and then in Delhi in  a much larger format.

Glowrious ( Light Installation)

Standing tall. Shining in the sanctified niche of time This installation of light “Glowrious” conveys the message of glory, the joy of victory, a remembrance of eternity and an outburst of merriment with its sight and reflection.

glowrious-9

Light here is not meant to illuminate the surroundings but to turn towards self and illuminate calmness, repose,  beauty gratitude. The whole framework of this installation through which the abstract ideas find expression to create reflective and refractive patterns of their own. “Glowrious” in this present look and feel took about a whole year of conceptualization and prototyping.

Each of his 100 light sculptures were first hand drawn, painted with his characteristic strokes in acrylic colours, then hand cut. After cutting and folding the sheet, (this is Poly Propylene corrugated  sheet with light insulating capacity, moisture resistant, aging resistance and high tensile strength and light weight) in a cubistic shapes of different heights keeping the breadth and depth similar he stiffened them with glue, before fastening the structure to a steel pedestal with nuts and bolts.

He is much interested to the temporality of this light installation which has a transformative impact with altered venues and time. “I think my installations will turn into public performances and events, while ‘Glowrious” spreads further its glory and light, quips Gopal with his eyes lit with optimism of grander installations”.

One Million Dzires

Location- Ambience mall, Gurugram

DZIRE Celebration

One Million Dzires..

For families around the world a car has never been just a mode of transport but a world of four wheel zooming its way into a network of paths and roads, creating memories especially the sweet ones. When a phenomenal name in the automobile industry contacted us to design an experiential public art installation for them celebrating their car DZIRE crossing one million mark, our creative juices curated sweetness with a sumptuous message for consumption. Just like how a family celebrates with sweets on buying a new car, the entire world translates happiness to sweets.

Gopal believes that the beauty of a design is in its simplicity and also in the way it engages the viewer and medium is but a material.

Thus began the inception of a world strenuously as well as artistically put together with boxes of sweets bringing alive the essence of each single Dzire building up to one million Dzires. On day one, the hustle bustle right inside the mall became his blank canvas. He started from  the scratch box by box, built up a whole cityscape with the help of nothing but perfectly strategized staking.

Gopal’s visual design experience from early years of graduation, came alive with immaculate precision, infallible concentration, and a certain artistic madness that can empower one to build anything. The activity that went on for 10 challenging hours had the viewers curiously anticipating to discover the idea of those elegant white unlabeled boxes gradually building up something. The next day after the boxes were distributed one by one. With the last box of chocolate distributed, the design built with so much integrity and hard work, lost its complete structure while gaining a permanent reflection in the minds of the people who were a part of this celebration.

“ Dear ARTWORKZZ” team we would like to thank and congratulate you for making Maruti Dzire 1 Million Campaign a great success . We just got silver in HT awards and even mention in Limca Book of Records as a largest edible art installation, because of your most creative enterprise  and look forward to having many more such partnerships ahead.”
